INDUSTRY COMPONENT

Diaphragm (for diaphragm pumps)

Flexible membrane component in diaphragm pumps that creates pumping action through reciprocating motion.

Component Specifications

Definition
A diaphragm is a flexible membrane component in diaphragm pumps that separates the fluid chamber from the drive mechanism. It undergoes reciprocating deformation through mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic actuation to create positive displacement pumping action, moving fluids without direct contact between the fluid and mechanical parts.
Working Principle
The diaphragm flexes back and forth through actuation (mechanical linkage, hydraulic pressure, or air pressure), creating alternating pressure differentials. On the suction stroke, it expands the fluid chamber volume, drawing fluid in through the inlet valve. On the discharge stroke, it compresses the chamber, forcing fluid out through the outlet valve.
Materials
Typically made from elastomers (EPDM, NBR, Viton/FKM, Silicone, PTFE-coated) or thermoplastics (Polyurethane, Hytrel) selected for chemical compatibility, temperature resistance, flexibility, and durability. Reinforcement may include fabric or metal inserts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a diaphragm be replaced in a diaphragm pump?

Replacement frequency depends on operating conditions, material compatibility, and cycle count. Typically, diaphragms last 3-24 months with regular inspection recommended every 500-2000 hours.

What materials are best for chemical resistance in diaphragms?

PTFE (Teflon) offers excellent chemical resistance; Viton/FKM handles oils and fuels; EPDM suits water and mild chemicals; NBR works with oils and hydrocarbons.

Can I contact factories directly?

Yes, each factory profile provides direct contact information.
